Tönnies Takes Over Danish Company Tican
Tönnies, the German meat and food group, is acquiring Danish slaughterhouse and meat processing company Tican subject to antitrust approval. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
Operating five production locations in Denmark, the UK and Poland, Tican currently has a capacity of about two million pigs per year and employs about 2,300 people. In the financial year 2013/2014 Tican achieved sales of €737.1 million.
A part of the agreement is the continuation of the co-operation with the co-operative Tican Amba. This will ensure long-term security of the raw material base for the important Danish pork market.
Tönnies has four business divisions – Meat, Convenience, Ingredients and Logistic. Founded in 1971, the core areas of the family business are the slaughter, butchering and processing of pigs, sows and cattle. The company brands which are best known to consumers are Tillmans and Toasty. Tillmans is the German market leader for ready-packed fresh meat and also offers a wide range of convenience products.
Tönnies employs approximately 10,000 people across eight German and one Danish production facility. The Tönnies group is active worldwide with 25 international offices. Exports account for about 50% of the group’s production.
