Danish meat processor Tican, which is now owned by Tönnies Group, plans to move the deboning of pork legs and the processing of bacon for the English market, currently carried out in Denmark, to Germany and the UK as of October 1st 2016.

Tican has experienced increasing difficulties in producing value-added bacon products at competitive prices for the English Market, and has been considering alternative solutions for quite some time. Its new membership of the Tönnies Group has now made it possible to change the set-up for the production which will support competitiveness.

The planned changes affect approximately 80 employees out of which approximately 55 are employed in the pork legs department in Thisted and 25 are employed in the bacon department in Ansager.

Ove Thejls, chief executive of Tican, comments: “Employees and management have been struggling for years to maintain the activities in Denmark. Unfortunately it has been associated with increasing difficulties, and other companies have already closed or moved deboning activities and bacon production to the UK or Germany. Through quite some time we have considered the same solution, and the change of ownership for Tican has now made it possible to carry out the plans due to existing capacity in other units in the Tönnies Group.”

He adds: “So far, the plan is to move deboning of legs to Germany, but on the long term this activity is also expected to be moved to the UK. The production of bacon can be transferred to existing production facilities in the UK as of October 1st.”
