Pilsner Urquell Celebrates 170 Year History in Pilsen, Czech Republic
To celebrate its 170th Anniversary Pilsner Urquell, the world’s first Pilsner style lager, hosted celebrations in Pilsen town square, on October 5th 2012. As part of the landmark anniversary celebrations, Pilsner Urquell used video projection mapping techniques to share a handpicked cross-section of the history of the Pilsner Urquell brewery on the side of the Cathedral of St Bartholomew; which boasts the tallest church spire in the Czech Republic at at 102.6m high.
The invention of Pilsner Urquell and its perfectly balanced taste of hoppy bitterness and caramel sweetness back in 1842 was a momentous milestone in the history of beer. Pilsner Urquell is the beer that defined the entire lager category, which today represents two thirds of all beer consumed.
Produced by Czech brewer Plzensky Prazdroj, Pilsner Urquell is the international flagship brand of SABMiller. With total sale of nearly 9.9 million hectolitres during 2011 (including licenced productions abroad) and with export to more than 50 countries worldwide, Plzensky Prazdroj is the biggest exporter of Czech beer.
SABMiller has beer brewing activities or distribution in more than 60 countries across six continents. The SABMiller portfolio also includes international brands such as Grolsch, Miller Genuine Draft and Peroni Nastro Azzurro, as well as almost 200 successful regional and national brands.
