The Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and MP for North Shropshire, Owen Paterson, has officially opened Grocontinental’s new 4,000 square metre frozen warehouse at the company’s headquarters.

The £5 million warehouse will increase the company’s frozen storage capacity by 13,000 pallets and will take the total storage capacity up to 143,000 pallets.  Food products will be stored at a temperature of as low as -28°c in the new facility.

Owen Paterson joined Grocontinental Directors and local councillors Peggy Mullock, Paul Wynn and Tom Biggins for a site tour to view the new warehouse and to meet operational staff.

Speaking during the visit, Owen Paterson said:

‘The success of Grocontinental is not just about corporate growth.  As the biggest employer in a predominately rural area, the company makes a major contribution to the local economy.  The company’s policy of using local suppliers, as far as possible, also helps to sustain other businesses in the area.’

‘In the last 15 years, the company has implemented a substantial development plan which is to be congratulated.  As well as local economic benefits, the company has also firmly established itself with food industry clients both nationwide and worldwide.

‘The new warehouse is a very positive indicator for the local area and the many families the company supports.  I look forward to news of further developments.’

David Grocott, Grocontinental’s Joint Managing Director said:

‘We’re very grateful to Owen Paterson for his support today opening the new warehouse which will we utilised by both existing and new customers.  We anticipate filling it shortly after hand-over by the construction team.

‘The new warehouse is part of our £12 million investment programme for 2013 which will also see the renewal of our entire vehicle fleet to keep pace with the latest in vehicle technology and economy.’

The warehouse has been built by construction contractor Chalcroft.
