Nagel Langdons, the UK subsidiary of the Nagel-Group, has signed an agreement with Macsween of Edinburgh which will see it expand its current storage and distribution service to include contract freezing, tempering and case picking for the Edinburgh based business.

The family owned business, founded by current owners and directors James and Jo Macsween’s grandfather more than 60 years ago, manufactures Scotland’s national dish from its purpose built production kitchen in Loanhead near Edinburgh.

James and Jo Macsween have been instrumental in driving growth in the category and attracting a new generation of consumers. What was once an occasional meal most commonly eaten to celebrate the birth of Robert Burns on the 25th January each year is now distributed throughout the UK all year round via Nagel Langdons and into Europe via the Nagel-Group network.

So why have they chosen to re-locate their in-house picking and despatch function to Nagel Langdons and what benefits will this bring to the business? James Macsween replies: “As our brand has grown we were keen to work with a trusted and experienced partner to support our operation. We required an expert in logistics to support our business so that we could focus on our area of expertise – making the best haggis in the world.”

Malcolm Wilde, General Manager for Scotland of Nagel Langdons, says: “Our strategy for the Scottish DC from the moment the investment plan was approved was to position ourselves as an added value service provider for Scottish food manufacturers and become more integrated with our customers supply chain. This agreement demonstrates the clear benefits of out-sourcing order assembly and despatch functions which can free-up space for production and ultimately improve productivity for our customers.”

The agreement includes inbound/outbound logistics, contract freezing and storage of 750 pallets of WIP stock, tempering, case picking, order assembly and despatch of approximately 250,000 cases of finished product annually.
