Lactalis Expands in Italy
Lactalis Group is strengthening its position within the Italian dairy industry by acquiring cheese maker Nuova Castelli for an undisclosed sum. Operating 13 production sites in Italy and three abroad – in Poland, Hungary and the US – Nuova Castelli specialises in the production and distribution of AOC cheese such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana and Gorgonzola.
The Italian company’s best known brands are Castilli, Mandara and Alival. In 2018, Nuova Castelli reported sales of €460 million, with 70% generated by exports. The deal enhances Lactalis Group’s leadership in AOC cheeses in international markets, where it already has a present in more than 140 countries. It also consolidates its standing in Italy, where the French dairy giant currently employs 5,500 people across 29 factories
The deal is subject to approval by the competition authorities.
