CFF introduces new and innovative fibre SANACEL betaG
Supported by nutrition scientists CFF is recommending an increase of daily dietary fibre intake and introduces a new healthy fibre SANACEL betaG with two health claims. This product, based on barley, is rich in beta-glucan, a polysaccharide with additional health benefits. It is therefore highly applicable for the dietary fibre enrichment of food products. Due to its typical beige colour, odour and taste SANACEL betaG is especially suitable for bakery goods, cerials and extruded products.The consumption of beta-glucan on a regular basis may reduce the risk for obesity, diabetes, obstipation, arteriosclerosis and heart diseases.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) had well-reviewed health claims for beta-glucan:
“Regular consumption of ß-glucans contributes to maintenance of healthy blood cholesterol concentrations”. In order to bear the claim, food containing beta-glucan should provide at least 3g of beta-glucan per day in 1 to 4 servings. Furthermore beta-glucan acts as prebiotic and anti-carcinogen. “Consumption of ß-glucans contributes to the reduction of the glucose rise after a meal.” In order to obtain the claimed effect, 4 g of beta-glucans from barley for each 30 g of available carbohydrates should be consumed per meal.

Their technical advantage is a higher water binding capacity. Soluble fibres are retaining water for a long time and are increasing the viscosity of the product as of their gelforming character. That results in a longer fresh keeping, in reduced baking losses or in protection against syneresis.
