SIG Combibloc was crowned Packaging King after winning the Lions’ Lair competition at this year’s Packaging Innovations & Luxury Packaging London show on Wednesday 2 October. The company was one of four brave exhibitors that pitched their most pioneering products to a panel of fierce packaging experts.

Making up the panel of expert judges (Lions) were: Paul Day, Packaging Technologist at Neal’s Yard Remedies; Josh Brooks, Brand Director at Packaging News; Robert Opie, Founder & Curator of the Museum of Brands; and Tom Keeling, Lead Designer at Manchester United Football Club.

SIG Combibloc was the second competitor to enter the Lair, pitching its innovative product ‘Combidome’ – the first ever bottle made of cardboard.

The new innovative ‘Combidome’ combined the best features of a carton pack with the best features of a bottle – guaranteeing exceptional differentiation for any beverage. Thanks to its shape, stability and smooth pouring action, Combidome seemed easy to handle, like a bottle, while at the same time offering all the proven and unrivalled benefits of a carton pack in terms of product protection, environmental and economic considerations; benefits that are equally important for manufacturers, retailers and consumers.

On winning the Lions’ Lair accolade, Malcolm Allum, Managing Director at SIG Combibloc, commented: “SIG Combibloc is delighted to win Lions’ Lair this year, especially as it was voted by the prestigious panel and audience.  This is the third award in just three weeks for our new innovation Combidome, so it is really building momentum. It was great to see the other shortlisted product presentations and we wish the other companies luck with their innovations.”

The three other companies that took part in the competition were DAPY Paris, Design Activity and EasyPack.

DAPY Paris pitched its Pulsar display box for Dom Pérignon. The technological innovation made from molded plastic, reproduced the shape of the famous bottle displaying the Dom Pérignon logo and messaging by using more than 1200 micro leds injected into the clamshell display case. The illuminated box serves as a jewelled presentation case, mainly for use in bars and night clubs.

Having been approached by many smaller companies when first exhibiting at Packaging Innovations in 2011, Design Activity returned this year pitching a new service, Launch Pad. Specifically developed for those with limited resource (time and cost), the new service provides award-winning branding and packaging design expertise, within an accessible pricing structure. The new service is certainly something that most start-up businesses are looking for when they want to make their mark within the industry.

EasyPack pitched Spiral Pro, which uses Easypack’s patented technology to deliver high volumes of void-fill paper packaging in seconds. The 100% recycled paper offered great protection for products of all shapes and sizes, across a range of industries. The new automated dispenser is slim-line to fit into almost any packaging unit and takes only moments to install.

The Lions’ Lair was one of the show floor features at Packaging Innovations London. The show, which took place on 1 & 2 October 2013, received record-breaking exhibitor and visitor numbers, with major names such as Miracle-Gro, Marks & Spencer, Kimberly Clark, and Bombay Sapphire speaking as part of the learnShops seminars.

The next event will be Packaging Innovations NEC, which takes place on 26 & 27 February 2014; for anyone interested in exhibiting, more information can be found at  www.easyFairs.com/PIUK  or via the Packaging Innovations team on +44 (0)20 8843 8800 or PackagingUK@easyFairs.com.

Packaging Innovations London will return on 30 September & 1 October 2014, again at the Business Design Centre, Islington.
