C&C Group to Close Two Production Plants
Drinks producer C&C Group is to close its bottling plant at Borrisoleigh in Ireland and its cider plant at Shepton Mallet in England. Production from both plants will be consolidated at C&C’s plant at Clonnel in Ireland which will become the central manufacturing site for both Bulmers and Magners cider, Tipperary Water and the group’s range of premium beers and ciders.
C&C plans to invest in excess of €10 million at Clonmel leading to the creation of 80 jobs. However, the net loss across its operations will be about 180 jobs, of which 127 are in the UK and 54 in Ireland. According to C&C, the rationalisation is due to the intensely competitive trading environment in the UK and Ireland, characterised by significant downward pricing pressure, combined with the loss of contracts for private label water.
