Bernard Matthews gobbles up biogas plant
UK turkey farmer and supplier Bernard Matthews (BM) is set to install a biogas plant near its processing site in Holton, Suffolk.
The plant, called Holton Renewable Power, is a joint venture between BM and Glendale Power with biogas specialists Xergi providing the construction.
‘The biogas plant converts the processing waste into an energy resource. Digesting the waste will also allow the company to handle its own material,’ says Xergi sales manager Jørgen Fink.
BM has previously delivered its waste to an external service contractor for processing, but with the biogas plant it will be able to manage everything on-site and will save over 1,000 lorry journeys a year.
The biogas created will be used for the production of electricity and heating, supplying 16% of the company’s energy needs. It will also lead to a C02 reduction of 2,800 tonnes.
