Terracycle partners with Kenco for coffee pack recycling push
Packaging ‘upcycle’ business Terracycle is aiming to boost the recycling of coffee packaging after linking up with Kenco
Both companies have launched the Coffee Packaging Brigade, designed to allow consumers to recycle packs including refill bags, coffee bean bags, jar lids and single serving sachets.
According to Terracycle, the aim differs from previous programmes, such as the McVite’s Biscuit Wrapper Brigade which encouraged participants to sign up and collect at home.
The coffee project is targets public locations across the UK to act as hub locations and house a collection box for local communities to drop their coffee packaging waste to.
“Coffee packaging waste is a mix of difficult to recycle materials which most local council collections simply don’t have the infrastructure to recycle, so the waste ends up in local landfills,” said Terracycle. “The aim is to enable local communities to come together to save as much coffee packaging waste from local landfill to be recycled, while raising money for good causes. The coffee packaging waste will be recycled into plastic products such as park benches, watering cans and waste bins.”
There will be an initial 100 hubs set up while collection locations targeted include libraries, town halls, community centres and retailers.
